December is just round the corner and we can already see all the companies homing in on ‘new year new me’ – advertising for that new year transition and January 2025 to be the kickstart of it.
This time of year can be quite challenging for us.
We spend very little time in the present moment – we sit and reflect on the year that we have had, what we have or have not accomplished, whether we did or did not achieve the resolutions we had set ourselves in January 2024 and then formulating a new, probably unrealistic set of goals for the new year ahead.
A lot of comparison comes to play – maybe with your friends or the strangers that you follow on instagram and TikTok because for them 2024 has been their ‘best year yet’ but for you – maybe its just been ok. Steady but no big drastic changes. (That by the way is absolutely NORMAL)
I definitely used to fall down the trap of setting myself these crazy goals each January to complete – but then I never actually took the time to delve into what I would need to do / have in order to achieve those goals – in some ways almost setting myself up for ‘failure’
I don’t disagree with setting goals for a new year – I think its amazing to want to achieve things. I just think there is a way to go about them to make them healthy and actually attainable that you don’t alway see advertised.
Take starting the gym for example – trainers online will say to just DO IT, just get up and go – but how realistic is that to find that motivation every day to just get up and go – with no sense of accountability and structure behind it.
Starting the gym would be a great goal – but how can you support yourself in ensuring that it happens?
Questions to ask yourself:
- How frequently will you want to go
- What do you need around you to ensure you stick to structure
- Who have you got that can support you in your accountability?
Essentially work out the practicalities of the goals you may be setting yourself – formulate plans around them. And then work to hold yourself accountable for those goals.
I have been doing this over the last few months – I will start by identifying what the goal may be and then I will go back in and identify all the steps which will need to be completed in order for the goal to be achieved. I have definitely noticed a big shift in my progress and ‘motivation’ since doing this.
NEW PERSPECTIVE
If you have found yourself upset or disappointed by the year that you have had, maybe you feel like you didn’t achieve everything you wanted to – start to look at the lessons you have learnt along the way.
What have you learnt?
What obstacles have you overcome?
Did you manage to push yourself out of your comfort zone at all?
Did you complete any challenges?
Did you start something new?
Did you let go of something that was holding you back?
Did you keep going when things got tough?
Take the time to soak in the lessons. Let these lessons direct you into 2025.
You right now are more than enough. You do not need to go through some big transition in 2025 to be more worthy. You are worthy as you are.
